On 18 November 2023, during the Miss Universe 2023 pageant, businessman Raúl Rocha Cantú announced via a video presentation that the 73rd edition will be held in Mexico.
In September 2023, during the Tanner Fletcher show at New York Fashion Week, Miss Universe 2022 R'Bonney Gabriel revealed that the Miss Universe Organization had made the decision to remove age restrictions for contestants over the age of 18, which would be implemented starting with the 2024 edition. Prior to this change, the pageant had restricted participation to women between ages 18–28 on the year of the pageant, outside of special circumstances.
This edition will mark the debut of Iran and the returns of Bangladesh, Belize, Botswana, China, Cuba, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, New Zealand, Samoa, Turks and Caicos, and the US Virgin Islands. Cuba last competed in 1967, which will be the country's first time to compete after six decades of absence from the competition; Samoa last competed in 1986 (as Western Samoa); Botswana last competed in 2013; Turks and Caicos last competed in 2014; Bangladesh, New Zealand, and the US Virgin Islands last competed in 2019; Kenya last competed in 2021; while the others last competed in 2022.
The 2024 edition of Miss Universe Malta has officially begun as the organization has unveiled the official delegates who will compete to be crowned Miss Universe Malta 2024. The winner will represent Malta at Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico. The winner will succeed Miss Universe Malta 2023 Ella Portelli which had an incredible performance in El Salvador.
Twenty-five contestants were officially sashed at the sash presentation held on 23rd March 2024 at Medusa Sky Bar.
They will all fight for the most prestigious crown in the country set for the 11th of July in Hilton Conference Centre.
